Savage 24 Serial Number Dates

Savage 24 serial number dates model

I have a Savage Model 110, 7mm Rem Mag with the serial number F76xx15. I'm trying to get all my guns info on record and was wondering if anyone could tell me the year of manufacture for this rifle? Ive had this rifle for several years now and have looked relentlessly it seems, but absolutly cannot find the exact year of manufacture? Serial numbers started at 1, so yours is the 36,xxx rifle produced that year. I own the 71st 110 to come off the production line, has a 4 digit serial number with an '16I' barrel stamp. Production date on mine has been confirmed as 1957 and is the oldest known 4-digit serial number 110 in forum member Mad Dog's registry. Nov 05, 2013  Savage still had a few of the hard chrome receiver 24J-DL guns left in stock when the serial number mandate began and thus the earliest serial numbered Savage combination guns are the hard chrome 24J-DL. In 1968, Savage changed the finish to a black painted receiver, but continued to mark them as 24J-DL and all have serial numbers.

My references show nothing for a model 24 Savage. If you are referring to the model 242, .410, over/under, they were manuf. from 1977-81. Hope this helps.

I too own a Savage Model 24 combination rifle/shotgun, mine is 22 magnum rifle over 20 gauge shotgun. Mine was purchased new in 1968. As I recall, they were available in the early 60's and a model of the same gun, I think, is still available today. The last new one I saw was 222 rifle over 12 gauge. As a youngster, mine served me very well.

The model 24 started out as the '.22/.410', was originally marketed as a 'Stevens', and was only available for a long time as a .22 LR over a .410.
I don't know the introduction date, or when .22MRF ,centerfire rifle barrels and larger bore shotgun barrels were introduced, but guns marked with the Westfield Mass. address were made after 1960-61. Older guns, (.22/.410's) had a barrel selector button on the side of the frame. Later guns had/have a selector switch mounted on the hammer.
That's all I know.

found this, on that site, don't know if it is correct
Stevens / Savage 24 date codes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 1949 B 1950 C 1951
D 1952 E 1953 F 1954
G 1955 H 1956 I 1957
J 1958 K 1959 L 1960
M 1961 N 1962 P 1963
R 1964 S 1965 T 1966
U 1967 V 1968 W 1969
X1970
'Collectors will find a date code stamped on every double-barrel shotgun in the Stevens brands produced between March 1949 and December 1968. Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter. The letters correspond to the years shown in the following table. Significance of the numbers is not known.'*
*From page 1101 of Ned Schwing's 2004 Standard Catalog of Firearms, 14th Edition, published by Krause Publications of Iola, WI.
I would like to add that I have found this circle, or oval, containing one or two numbers plus a single letter, just about anywhere and everywhere on the frame, but only on the outside of the frame, never inside. I have also found the circle or oval with letters and numbers on the barrel clusters, on the shot barrel or on the barrel assembly lug block. While the letter within the circle always match on factory matching barrel and frame, the numbers never match, or at least that has always been my experience. These Date Codes are also present on the Model 94 frames and barrels, andI am sure on many others.
The marks on the inside of the frame, where the lower barrel seats when closed, are what I would call assembly stampings, and match frame to barrel, found on underside of shot barrel near forend lug, and also sometimes found on the butt stock under the butt plate.

Savage introduced the Stevens Model Four-Ten in 1936, then the 'Savage' .22LR/.410 Model 24 in the late 1940's.
None had serial numbers until required by GCA-68 in 1968, and AFAIK Savage dropped the 22/.410 combination (as opposed to other combos) in 1989 - so that would put the DOM of your M24 somewhere between 1968 & 1989, depending upon exactly which version it is.
A DOM request to the Savage historian, John Gallagher, accompanied by the model, SN and a check for $15 should get you a better defined DOM.
Some had bbls welded together, while later guns had separated bbls
Some had silvered/pickled receivers, while others had blued or case-colored ones.
Some had birchwood stocks, some Walnut, and others synthetic.
Some had top-opening levers, other had side levers.
All were assigned different Model/version number/letters.
A few pics would help.

to CriscoKid:
my Savage Model 24 was around before 1964 and has a serial number on it. Can't find a letter so can't reply to abr10dr comment on the letter/date issue.

I inherited a Savage 24D - series P 22lr/.410 and really know nothing about it except that it was my grandfathers' and is probably somewhere around 50 - 60 years old.
The barrels are separated by a gap and clamped with a front sight blade assembly.
Both barrels and the trigger guard are blued to the point of appearing black.
The receiver bluing looks like it's mottled or marbled.
I'm not sure what type of wood makes up the stock and forearm.
The engraving on the right side of the receiver is: SAVAGE 24D-SERIES P
The left side has the serial number which begins with B665
The barrel engravings are:
Top barrel: .22 LONG RIFFLE
Left side of bottom barrel: PROOF TESTED .410 BORE
3 INCH CHAMBER
Right side of bottom barrel: (It looks like) SP5 -- SAVAGE ARMS --
WESTFIELD, MASS. U.S.A.
The Selector Switch is embedded in the hammer.
Both sides of the hammer are engraved with angled arrows pointed forward and back.
That's as much information as I have except to say that the Savage is in excellent condition.(My grandpa's philosophy was that if you took care of your equipment, your equipment would take care of you.)
I'm probably going to sell the shotgun and would really appreciate any information regarding the history and value of this Savage 24D.
Thanks...
