Anyone know the procedure for this? Nothing on web site for this scenario and the number is constantly busy?
Thanks in advance
Oh and the person wants to keep their UK license because they come back to this country fairly often and could possibly settle back here hence wanting to keep it renewed
  1. Driving licence renewal and exchange. If you move to another EU country and your driving licence is lost, stolen, damaged or expired, you should renew, replace or exchange it in the country where you usually live. Also, find out what you have to do if your driving licence is lost or stolen while you are travelling abroad.
  2. Renew your driving licence. Renew your driving licence online with DVLA if you have a valid UK passport. There’s a different way to renew your licence if you’re 70 or over and renew a 5-year bus or lorry licence. Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you do not have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application.
  3. Happier Abroad Forum Community. How do I renew my US drivers license overseas? Winston, when I was in Peru, New York State (where I lived before) would not allow me to renew my drivers license being that I was living overseas and I was no longer a resident of the state (because I was out of NY for more than 6 months). I am sure most.

Renew Uk Driving Licence Abroad

I seen this posted on another forum there ( did a quick search)
    Question
Has anyone renewed their UK 10 year photo driving licence while living in the USA.
Appreciate that there is no way to do it over here but wondered if anyone had successfully done so via a family members address in the UK.
Or in fact is there any practical reason to do so and no real disadvantage by just letting it expire.
    Answer
You can't renew it till you move back ! .... It will be renewed without having to take another test though ... Benn through all this and talked to staff at DVLC in Swansea.
If it's of no help, just ignore it lol

To obtain a driving licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), you will also need to have a permanent address in England, Scotland or Wales.

    Rightfully so too,
It would enable a lot of cross-country licence problems. You should only have a licence of the country where you are a permanent resident.

Not what he wanted to hear but c'est la vie!

Does he not have a relative in the UK that he could use as an accommodation address.

Which works, but is of course illegal.

Op, why dont you just apply for another driving licence if yours is about to run out, just get a replacement 10 year driving licence. People can have more than one passport so I cant see why they should not have more than one driving licence.

    Hi OP,
can i offer a little advice as i live abroad?
    1) he is supposed to obtain a licence for the country he is resident in, within a certain period of arriving there - here in the netherlands theres some dispute but it between 6 and 12 months. obviously that will depend on where he lives....
    2) its more benficial to have a foreign licence when back in the UK anyway - i have been stopped by customs when entering the country to have the car searched, when you tell them your an englishman driving a foreign vehicle because you reside there and can show a foreign licence then they seem a bit more relaxed about the situation (ive been told its cos they are suspicious over NL cars but thats another story). I was also stopped by the police on the M20 for speeding (i was doing around 75 mph) - i handed them my dutch licence and they immediately let me go with a warning and the advice to get a sticker with MPH conversions on my dashboard
    3) if he moves back to the UK he only needs to reapply for a copy of his UK licence using his new UK address or hand in the foreign licence and swap it for a UK one if he wants to do it that way.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm in a similar situation except I'm a student in the US- the UK is my resident country but I spend over 340 days in the US a year.
I've been needing to change the address on my UK license for the last 3 years (I know, i know!)- can i do this given that I spend so much time outside the US or should I have handed my UK license in?

Thank you for the link- I drive over here (Florida) on a FL license & have done for over 3 years, the problem is when I'm back in the UK, my parents' insurers want my UK license so I can be on their policy when I am back... If I get pulled over my address on my UK license is wrong.... I'll give the DVLA a call and see what they suggest!
